Ryuichi Sakamoto wrote Merry Christmas, Mr. Lawrence as the theme for Nagisa Oshima's 1983 film, in which he also starred opposite David Bowie, and its chiming melody became his signature piece. In 1996 he revisited it in an intimate chamber arrangement for piano trio, and that version is the source here.
The transcription follows the piano at the heart of that 1996 recording: the famous theme, the bell-like ostinato, and the quiet ache underneath.
