Jerome Kern and Otto Harbach wrote Yesterdays for the 1933 musical Roberta, and its brooding minor theme drew jazz musicians from the start. Tatum kept it in his repertoire for years, every pass through the tune sprouting fresh substitutions and cascades.
This version was filmed for television in New York in 1954, which makes it a rarity twice over: Tatum recorded constantly but was almost never filmed, and this clip is one of the few surviving chances to watch his hands at work.
Every run and reharmonisation is transcribed exactly as played, with right and left hand on separate channels for slow practice.
