In 1949 Erroll Garner, who never learned to read music, recorded his own impression of Debussy: a free fantasy on Clair de lune that was issued as one side of a 78, with his arrangement of Reverie on the flip.
Impressions is not a transcription of Debussy so much as Garner dreaming through him, the famous melody surfacing out of rolled chords and hazy pedal colours, all of it absorbed and rebuilt entirely by ear.
The MIDI captures the performance in full with the hands on separate channels.

Erroll Garner, the self-taught composer of Misty, swung like a full orchestra: left hand strumming steady fours like a rhythm guitar, right hand floating just behind the beat. He never learned to read music and never needed to.
