Erroll Garner composed Misty in 1954; five years later Johnny Burke's lyric and Johnny Mathis' voice made it immortal. Mathis recorded it for his album Heavenly, and the single climbed to number twelve on the American pop chart in 1959 on its way to becoming his signature song.
This free file follows that Mathis record at Beginner level: the famous melody and the ballad harmony beneath it, kept simple enough for a developing player to put under the hands.

Erroll Garner, the self-taught composer of Misty, swung like a full orchestra: left hand strumming steady fours like a rhythm guitar, right hand floating just behind the beat. He never learned to read music and never needed to.
