Johnny Guarnieri spent the forties as one of the busiest pianists in swing, recording with Benny Goodman and Artie Shaw and playing harpsichord in Shaw's Gramercy Five. In his later years in Los Angeles he reinvented himself as a solo virtuoso with a taste for the impossible.
Recasting the classics was a favourite trick, and this stride transformation of Chopin's Waltz in C sharp minor, Op. 64 No. 2, is a perfect example: the salon waltz becomes a two-beat romp, Chopin's filigree intact above a leaping left hand.
