Red Garland

Red Garland took up the piano in the Army, where he lost a boxing bout to Sugar Ray Robinson, and was Miles Davis's pianist from 1955 to 1958. Direct rather than flowery, he helped put block chords into the jazz piano vocabulary and cut twenty-five albums for Prestige, the early ones with Paul Chambers and Art Taylor.
