Johnny Mandel wrote A Time for Love for the 1966 film An American Dream, and its long, sighing melody could have been made for Bill Evans.
Evans recorded it for Alone, the solo album he made for Verve at Webster Hall in New York in the autumn of 1968. Released in 1970, the record won a Grammy and stands among his finest unaccompanied work: no bass, no drums, just Evans following the harmony wherever it leads.
