Recorded in the week before Christmas 1963, at the Webster Hall date with Gary Peacock and Paul Motian that became the album Trio 64, this is what happens when a great band picks up a seasonal novelty and refuses to condescend to it.
Evans treats the Coots and Gillespie song as serious material: springy medium swing, the melody displaced and reharmonised, real improvising in between. Reviewers have called the result a minor post-bop masterpiece, and it has become a jazz Christmas staple.
