In April 1962, in the difficult months after the death of bassist Scott LaFaro, Bill Evans booked a studio to attempt a solo album. He recorded a handful of tunes, Danny Boy among them, then set the project aside; the tapes stayed shelved until they surfaced on the posthumous collection Conception.
The old Irish air suits what Evans was reaching for that day. He plays it slowly and almost privately, letting the melody settle into unhurried voicings with plenty of silence around them.
Transcribed from the recording with separated hands, it makes an approachable study in Evans' ballad harmony.
