Bud Powell is remembered for velocity, but his ballads are just as telling. He recorded the Jimmy Van Heusen and Johnny Burke song Polka Dots and Moonbeams at WOR Studios in August 1953, with George Duvivier on bass and Art Taylor on drums, released the following year on The Amazing Bud Powell, Vol. 2 on Blue Note.
Powell keeps the tempo at a slow drift and pours everything into the harmony: thick, searching chords under a melody he ornaments the way a horn player would.
