I Cover the Waterfront, the Johnny Green torch song from 1933, was a staple of Erroll Garner's ballad book. This trio side was cut for Columbia in 1951, in the middle of the extraordinary run of records that made Garner one of the most popular jazz pianists alive.
The performance has all his trademarks: a rhapsodic free-time introduction, the left hand settling into its guitar-like strum, and the melody arriving fashionably late behind the beat.
