After his first tours of France, Erroll Garner recorded Paris Impressions for Columbia in 1958, a double album devoted to songs of his favourite city. Edith Piaf's La Vie en Rose sits at its heart.
He plays it as a love letter: free-time flourishes giving way to that rocking left-hand pulse, the melody sung out behind the beat with complete affection.
Transcribed in full from the recording, with separated hands for study.

Erroll Garner, the self-taught composer of Misty, swung like a full orchestra: left hand strumming steady fours like a rhythm guitar, right hand floating just behind the beat. He never learned to read music and never needed to.
