Early Summer is Ryo Fukui's own composition and the tour de force of Scenery, the 1976 trio album he recorded in Sapporo that grew, decades later, into a cornerstone of Japanese jazz's worldwide rediscovery.
It opens on a modal vamp and keeps climbing: double-time swing, long chromatic lines, and quartal voicings that nod to McCoy Tyner, sustained across more than ten minutes of playing.
The full performance is transcribed with the hands separated, a serious and rewarding project for an ambitious player.
