When Columbia recorded The Eighty-Six Years of Eubie Blake across sessions in 1968 and 1969, the ragtime pioneer had outlived nearly all of his contemporaries, and the double album became the document of a vanished era; in 2006 the Library of Congress added it to the National Recording Registry.

Here Blake takes on Scott Joplin's Maple Leaf Rag, the piece that started it all in 1899, and plays it his own way: faster and freer than the printed page, with the swagger of the East-coast school he helped invent.
