A galop is a fast duple-time dance from the nineteenth-century ballroom, and Cyclone Galop is Wiggins doing what he did better than almost anyone: turning weather into piano music. It opens in a darker, more dramatic register before settling into the bright, driving dance that gives the piece its name, the storm arriving and then blowing itself out.
It appeared in print in 1887, late in his working life and in the middle of the long custody fight over him. Like much of his output it was published without his name properly attached, which is its own comment on a career in which he generated a fortune and kept almost none of it.
The transcription follows the piece as played, with the left and right hands on separate MIDI channels so the dance figure underneath can be studied on its own.
