On the Street Where You Live, from Lerner and Loewe's My Fair Lady, gets a wry, elegant solo treatment from George Shearing. The performance comes from The Shearing Piano, the rare all-solo album he cut for Capitol in the fifties, back in circulation since its 2001 CD reissue.
True to form, Shearing cannot resist a learned joke: the arrangement threads a theme by the French composer Poulenc through Broadway's most optimistic love song, and makes the pairing sound inevitable.
The transcription follows the record exactly, hands separated for study.
