In the spring of 1938 Alan Lomax sat Jelly Roll Morton at a piano in the Library of Congress and recorded him for weeks: part memoir, part demonstration, all history. Among the performances is this take on Ain't Misbehavin', Fats Waller's 1929 hit.
Morton plays the younger man's song entirely on his own terms, relaxed and unhurried, with the rolling New Orleans bass and singing right hand he had been refining since Storyville.
