Among the 1938 Library of Congress recordings is a run of Creole songs, and this is one of them: music from the French-speaking New Orleans that Morton was born into as Ferdinand Lamothe, in a family whose older members, he told Alan Lomax, never spoke a word of English. The title is Creole French, roughly that was another can-can, so pay up.
These were the oldest things he played for Lomax, carried out of childhood rather than off a printed page, and they show what the dance music of the city sounded like before anyone thought to call it jazz. Morton holds it at an easy walking tempo and lets the tune carry itself.
