Morton insisted that jazz without what he called the Spanish tinge was missing its seasoning, and Spanish Swat is his demonstration: a habanera bass under blues harmony, the New Orleans mixture in its purest form.
He recorded it during the 1938 Library of Congress sessions with Alan Lomax, and it remains one of the best introductions to the Latin thread running through early jazz.
