Mamie's Blues comes from Morton's final recording sessions, made for General Records in New York in December 1939 and issued on the album New Orleans Memories. He presented it as the first blues he ever heard, learned from Mamie Desdunes, a neighbour in the New Orleans of his childhood.
It is a slow blues of complete simplicity and depth, and one of the most affecting things Morton ever recorded.
With its gentle tempo and economical left hand, this is also one of the most approachable files in the catalog: a genuinely Beginner-friendly piece of jazz history, transcribed with separated hands.
