Panama, William H. Tyers' 1911 number, became a New Orleans brass-band standard and a test piece for hot ensembles. Morton recorded this solo version during the 1938 Library of Congress sessions with Alan Lomax.
In under ninety seconds he moves the whole tradition to the keyboard, parade rhythms in the left hand and clarinet-style figures in the right.
