Morton's credo was that jazz should be played sweet and soft with plenty of rhythm, and this Library of Congress performance is that philosophy made audible: an easy, rocking swing that never raises its voice.
Recorded in 1938 while Alan Lomax's discs turned, it is Morton the theorist and Morton the player in perfect agreement, demonstrating how much heat a quiet groove can carry.
