State and Madison takes its name from the Chicago intersection once billed as the busiest corner in the world. Morton spent his greatest recording years in that city, and this tune belongs to that chapter of the story.
The solo performance comes from the 1938 Library of Congress sessions, played with the poise of a man revisiting his own prime: strutting bass, ringing trumpet-style lead, no wasted gestures.
