When Sunny Gets Blue, the Marvin Fisher and Jack Segal ballad, appears on Today and Tomorrow, the album McCoy Tyner released on Impulse! in 1964 while he was still the pianist of the John Coltrane Quartet.
Away from Coltrane's storms he shows his lyrical side: a patient, singing statement of the melody, harmony that glows rather than burns, and just enough of those open voicings to sign the performance.
