Bud Powell lived on McCoy Tyner's block in Philadelphia when Tyner was young, a hero close enough to study in person. Bouncin' With Bud, Powell's bebop line, was a natural choice when Tyner recorded Soliloquy, the solo album he made for Blue Note at Merkin Hall in New York in February 1991.
Tyner plays Powell in his own dialect: the bebop head is all there, but underneath it those trademark fourths and that thunderous left hand turn the tribute into pure Tyner.
