Shine dates from 1910, and Harlem's stride pianists adopted it early as a display piece; the Lion had been playing it for half a century when he recorded this version for French Decca in the mid sixties.
Age had cost him nothing. The tempo is fearless, the left hand strides through every chorus, and the variations keep coming with the swagger that earned him his nickname.

A giant of Harlem stride piano, Willie "The Lion" Smith paired swaggering technique with a surprisingly impressionistic ear for harmony.
