Filmed for Danish television in Copenhagen in April 1966, this solo Don't Blame Me catches Monk live and unaccompanied, taking the 1932 McHugh and Fields standard somewhere entirely his own.

He plays it as a stride ballad with the seams showing on purpose: whole-tone runs, rhythmic hiccups, the melody bent but never lost across five unhurried minutes.

A complete transcription of the performance with the hands separated for practice.

Portrait of Thelonious Monk
Thelonious Monk

Thelonious Monk built a whole sound world from angular melodies, dissonant clusters and radical use of space. Among the most recorded jazz composers ever, his tunes like Blue Monk and Round Midnight are cornerstones of the repertoire.
