In October 1959 Monk recorded a solo album in an empty hall in San Francisco, released as Thelonious Alone in San Francisco. His unaccompanied Blue Monk from those afternoons is among the definitive versions of his most-loved blues.

Alone, he stretches the twelve bars exactly as he pleases: stride fragments, crushed seconds, silences where you expect notes, and that dry wit in every chorus.

Transcribed note for note with separated hands, it is a manageable doorway into Monk's language.

Portrait of Thelonious Monk
Thelonious Monk

Thelonious Monk built a whole sound world from angular melodies, dissonant clusters and radical use of space. Among the most recorded jazz composers ever, his tunes like Blue Monk and Round Midnight are cornerstones of the repertoire.
